The Austrian Grand Prix has become the first race of the season to receive an official heat-hazard designation, triggered by a severe heatwave sweeping across Europe and shattering temperature records in numerous nations, including the United Kingdom.
Introduced during the 2023 season, the protocol was previously invoked at the Singapore and United States Grands Prix.
Despite the risks, some drivers opt against utilizing the mandated cooling equipment due to discomfort and past reliability issues; coolant systems have occasionally depleted before the race concludes, leaving the fluid to heat up to temperatures far exceeding the ambient air.
Cockpit temperatures frequently surpass 40°C, and with drivers encased in multiple layers of fire-resistant gear, balaclavas, and helmets, the threat of overheating remains a critical safety concern.
