Disgraced best-selling author Craig Silvey has publicly acknowledged his child exploitation offenses in a comprehensive 9,000-word apology posted on his Substack blog. The piece, titled “My Apology,” was published following his sentencing to seven months in prison for distributing and possessing child exploitation material.
Silvey, a renowned young adult novelist, pleaded guilty to the charges earlier this month. In his apology, he expressed deep remorse, stating, “I am guilty of these offences. I am appalled and mortified by my conduct, and I am deeply, profoundly sorry.” He further acknowledged the harm caused, noting that his actions are “re-traumatising to victims, and perpetuates a cycle of harm.”
The author, who is a father of three, admitted to betraying the trust of his readers and the public, many of whom reacted with “shock, dismay, disgust, concern and disappointment.” He addressed potential misconceptions about his motivations, asserting that his behavior was not driven by any inappropriate attraction but rather by a personal crisis.
Silvey revealed that he had struggled with “trauma, shame and anxiety” for most of his life, culminating in a “crisis of mental health and a destructive, despairing breakdown” prior to his offenses. Police discovered numerous sexually explicit images and videos of children and adults on his devices during a raid at his Fremantle home. Additionally, he had engaged in online conversations discussing child exploitation material, including disturbing statements about age preferences.
Despite the gravity of his actions, Silvey has a notable literary career. He was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin and International Dublin literary awards and is best known for his 2009 novel “Jasper Jones,” considered a modern Australian classic and adapted for film and stage. His other works, such as “Honeybee” and “Runt,” have also received acclaim and been adapted into films.
