Experts note that such actions are part of a global trend driven by far-right narratives seeking to reinforce “traditional family values” and create a divisive “us versus them” dynamic.
“Turkey’s crackdown is part of a longer-term strategy, but its recent intensity signals a dangerous escalation,” said Dr. Koen Slootmaeckers, a political analyst at City St George’s University of London. “Authoritarian regimes often weaponize cultural issues to deflect from political crises or consolidate power.”
These efforts frequently conflate LGBTQ+ identities with threats to social order, leveraging fears around “child protection” to justify repression. Turkey’s Justice Minister Akin Gurlek recently declared, “No criminal organization, abuse network, or illegal activity targeting children, youths, or families will be tolerated,” echoing rhetoric common in other repressive states.
Global Backslide on LGBTQ+ Rights
The 2026 Civicus report highlights a coordinated global assault on women’s and LGBTQI+ rights, with the U.S. under Donald Trump setting a precedent for rights reversals. Countries like Burkina Faso and Trinidad and Tobago have recently criminalized same-sex relationships, aligning with authoritarian tactics to delegitimize queer identities.
“The normalization of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment is accelerating,” Slootmaeckers noted. “Authoritarian governments exploit fears of social decay, framing LGBTQ+ rights as a luxury rather than a human right.”
Social Division as a Political Tool
In Hungary, Poland, and elsewhere, leaders frame LGBTQ+ inclusion as an “attack on national identity,” using scapegoating to divert attention from socioeconomic failures. Serbia, ranked 29th on the ILGA’s Rainbow Map, exemplifies this trend: 80% of respondents in a 2026 EU survey reported avoiding public displays of affection due to rising xenophobia and violence linked to nationalist groups.
EU Pressures Balkan Nations to Uphold Rights
The EU’s conditional support for Balkan accession has created “guardrails” against overt repression, but leaders like Serbia’s Aleksandar Vučić exploit ambiguities to undermine LGBTQ+ events, such as canceling EuroPride in 2022 under claims of national security threats. “They’re reintroducing outdated discourses tying homosexuality to paedophilia,” Slootmaeckers explained, linking this to a resurgence of antisocial, exclusionary policies.
Isolation Deepens Under Authoritarian Rule
In Turkey, LGBTQ+ activists report increasing marginalization and fear. Kaos GL, a local rights group, condemned recent raids as evidence of a “state-led campaign against civil society.” Dalia, a anonymous queer individual in Istanbul, told *DW*, “We’re told to stay silent, or we’ll become targets.”
Experts warn that as authoritarianism spreads, LGBTQ+ communities worldwide face mounting legal, social, and physical threats. “This isn’t just about politics—it’s about survival,” said Slootmaeckers.
