Balochistan Chief Minister Announces Civil Award for Heroic Man Who Rescued Injured Doctor After Acid Attack

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti announced on Sunday that a civil award will be presented to a man who assisted a female doctor injured in an acid attack at Quetta’s Civil Hospital.

On Saturday, Dr. Mahnoor Nisar was seriously injured at the Civil Hospital after an employee allegedly threw acid on her, according to police. She sustained severe burns on her face, chest, legs and other parts of her body.

Police reported that the assailant, who threw the acid, was killed in a confrontation after law enforcement located him while he was attempting to flee by bus.

CCTV footage captured the moment a man attempted to help Dr. Nisar as she fled a room after the attack, covering her with what appeared to be his jacket.

In a tweet, Chief Minister Bugti said Abdul Razzaq Tarakai, also an employee at the Civil Hospital, “displayed extraordinary courage, humanity, and dedication” by aiding Dr. Mahnoor and announced that a civil award would be conferred upon him.

The chief minister praised the act, stating that such brave individuals are valuable assets to society and exemplify service to humanity even under the most difficult circumstances.

Separately, Member of National Assembly Aseefa Bhutto-Zardari condemned the attack and requested President Asif Ali Zardari to award the highest civilian honor to Tarakai for his “selfless gallantry,” according to a statement from the President’s Secretariat.

She said his timely and courageous intervention not only saved a precious life but also serves as an inspiring example of humanity for the nation.

She urged relevant authorities to ensure that such incidents are curbed in the future.

Dr. Nisar was transferred to Karachi after initial treatment in Quetta and is currently receiving care at Aga Khan University Hospital.

Hospital sources reported that her condition is stable.

She has bilateral corneal opacities, a condition in which the clear surface of the eye becomes scarred, yet her vision remains intact. Plastic surgeons and ophthalmologists have been consulted to examine her.

The sources added that the burns appear superficial, with a detailed assessment pending.

Tarakai was discharged from a private hospital in Quetta where he was being treated for his burn injuries.

A senior official of Quetta’s Civil Hospital said he spoke with Chief Minister Bugti by phone.
