Balogun Accepts Controversy Over Suspension Decision as USA Falls to Belgium in World Cup Exit]
Folarin Balogun acknowledged that the decision to overturn his red-card suspension for the USMNT’s Round of 16 clash with Belgium was predictable in its controversy, though the striker was unable to impact the match as the Americans suffered a 4-1 defeat.
The 25-year-old, who plays for Monaco after coming through Arsenal’s youth system, was shown a red card in the previous round against Bosnia-Herzegovina before his suspension was overturned for the first time at a World Cup since 1962. Despite the attention surrounding his eligibility, Balogun failed to score or assist in his side’s Elimination Round appearance in Seattle.
“When you’re given a red card, usually the protocol is you don’t play in the following game,” Balogun said Monday after the match. “Then, when that decision’s overturned, of course, it’s going to be controversial.”
The decision drew criticism from European football authorities, with UEFA stating that FIFA “crossed a red line” and warning that undermining rule certainty threatens the integrity of competition. The controversy also attracted attention from political circles, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed he discussed the matter with FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.
Balogun declined further comment on the suspension situation, instead focusing on his team’s underwhelming performance. “There’s not too much else I can really say on the matter,” he said. “But Belgium were the better team today. They played much better than us.”
Reflecting on the loss, Balogun expressed personal disappointment at failing to contribute offensively. “Today we didn’t give the crowd a lot to cheer for,” he admitted. “That’s the most disappointing thing, and that’s the part that hurts the most for me personally. To not have the energy in a Round of 16 World Cup game, it’s difficult to explain.”
The result marked another early exit for the US Women’s National Team, who have not advanced beyond the Round of 16 since 2002. Despite Balogun’s efforts to move the ball forward throughout the match, the team struggled to create meaningful chances against a disciplined Belgian side.
The striker, who entered the tournament with three goals already credited, could not add to his tally as the USMNT’s campaign concluded without reaching the quarterfinals.
