FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has effectively secured the services of young talent Brian Farinas for the club’s first team following Tuesday’s triangular series matches against Nottingham Forest and Udinese.

Although the Catalan side managed only a 1-0 victory over Forest courtesy of a late Raphinha penalty, they fell short in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Cup final against Udinese, losing by the same margin in a rare triangular tournament format not seen in 24 years.

Despite the mixed results, 20-year-old Farinas impressed during his first-half performance against the Premier League opposition, catching the attention of the coaching staff.

His elevation to the first team had been predetermined before the tournament, according to SPORT. Sporting Director Deco met with the player’s representatives in late July, during which the coaching staff and board expressed their satisfaction with Farinas’ abilities and professional attitude.

This summer move allows Farinas to participate in Barcelona’s preseason training with the senior squad, following the same pathway taken by other promising youngsters under Flick’s management.

Marc Bernal serves as a recent example of a player who earned a first-team spot through this developmental process. Farinas is now set to officially join the first team setup for the 2026/2027 season, potentially earning his first professional minutes under Flick’s guidance.

Farinas Nearly Departed Before Promotion

The timing of Farinas’ advancement is particularly notable given previous transfer speculation linking him to a permanent move to Girona earlier this year.

The proposed deal involved a $1.75 million (€1.5 million) payment for 50% of his registration rights, with the transfer still possible in future windows should circumstances change.

However, Farinas’ inclusion in the first team appears to have paused those discussions, as his increased profile and official squad status likely enhance his market value.

His promotion also aligns with upcoming midfield restructuring at Barcelona, where expected arrivals like Rodri (pending agreement with Manchester City) may accelerate the departure of homegrown talents such as Marc Casado and Tommy Marques.

Flick views Farinas’ presence as integral to providing tactical flexibility and depth in midfield throughout the upcoming campaign, offering the Castellón native a chance to establish himself among Europe’s elite.
