BEIJING — China has firmly denied any involvement in United States elections, asserting that it has neither the intent nor the history of interfering in American democratic processes. Beijing urged Washington to cease making “groundless accusations” following claims by President Donald Trump that China meddled in the 2020 election.
During a national address on Thursday, President Trump reiterated his skepticism regarding the 2020 election results and specifically accused Beijing of interference.
“The relevant allegations by the U.S. are entirely fabricated and aimed at vilifying China,” stated Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian during a daily briefing in Beijing. “We have no interest in interfering in US elections and have never done so.”
When asked if these tensions could impact the scheduled visit of President Xi Jinping to the United States in September, Lin responded, “As I just said, we urge the U.S. to stop making an issue of China in its elections and do something conducive to China-U.S. relations.”
Following President Trump’s visit to Beijing in mid-May and his meeting with President Xi, both nations committed to a new framework for managing bilateral ties. President Trump extended an invitation for President Xi to visit the U.S. in September, an invitation that Beijing has since confirmed.
