Top-seeded Sabalenka briefly paused her US Open match against Kamilla Rakhimova following the detection of a potent cannabis odor, subsequently progressing to the fourth round in New York.
After sweeping through the first set to take an early 3–0 lead against Uzbekistan\’s Rakhimova, the Belarusian alerted umpire Eva Asderaki‑Moore that a conspicuous weed scent had permeated the court, prompting calls for intervention.
When instructed to escalate the issue, Sabalenka communicated her concern directly to the officiating crew via radio while simultaneously giving silent cues to her support team before play resumed.
Undeterred by the interruption, Sabalenka continued to dominate, ultimately securing a 6–3, 6–4 victory at Louis Armstrong Stadium as she continues her pursuit of a fifth Grand Slam singles title.
She remarked that it remains uncertain where the fragrance originated but appealed for greater awareness among the audience.
“Handling that smell while you’re trying to compete at your best is quite tricky,” Sabalenka reported.
“I do not know if it came from the crowd or was carried in by the wind, but I hope they will be more mindful of that matter.”
This incident is not unprecedented; many athletes at this year’s US Open have noted the presence of cannabis smoke, including Britain\’s Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart, and Francesca Jones, as well as former champions Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev.
