I spoke with four Iranian‑American fans before Iran’s first World Cup match against New Zealand, and they offered a concise view of the difficulties confronting Team Melli.
“The team is feeling pressure from both sides – from Iran and from the United States,” said Reza Shirazi, one of the supporters. He explained that the players must cope with severe expectations from Iranian authorities while also contending with U.S. restrictions that have hampered their World Cup preparation.
“You start with a big handicap,” he added, pointing to Iran’s current FIFA ranking of 21. “But that ranking reflects the past performance; it no longer represents where the team stands today.”
All four fans expressed empathy for the players and lamented the pervasive politicisation of the sport.
“They are just kids,” noted Mori Dowlat. “We want them to succeed, secure lucrative contracts and show their talent on world’s biggest stage.”
