While the Lyhanna case in France highlighted systemic failures in addressing sexual violence against minors, Belgium has emerged as a pioneering example through its Centres for the Care of Sexual Violence (CPVS). These centers operate on a streamlined principle: victims access medical care, forensic services, psychological support, and specialized law enforcement—all under one roof. Originally piloted in three hospitals, the model demonstrated measurable success in initial evaluations, prompting nationwide implementation in 2020.
In just three years, the CPVS initiative has seen a fourfold increase in reported cases, with approximately 11 individuals accessing services daily. This growth underscores both rising trust in the system and the program’s expanding reach. FRANCE 24’s Alix Le Bourdon and Dave Keating contributed to this report.
