As the would-be Hall of Fame coach prepares for his second collegiate season, which opens in Ireland, he addressed the possibility of returning to the NFL.
“I’m focused on UNC right now absolutely,” Belichick stated via Brian Murphy of WRAL. “I’ve recruited these kids, spent two years with them, and want to help them. While I had a great NFL career, I am very happy at North Carolina and excited about the future of our program.”
In reality, Belichick’s return to the NFL depends entirely on whether a team desires him. Despite three hiring cycles since the Patriots parted ways with him, he has secured only one interview.
This year, amidst ten available head coaching positions, his name never surfaced. Last year, both the Raiders and Tom Brady opted to hire Pete Carroll without seriously evaluating Belichick.
It is nearly impossible to envision Belichick making an NFL comeback. No fan base is demanding him, no front office wants to collaborate with him, and no owner is intrigued by the idea that he could elevate a struggling team to a championship.
The more pressing question is whether he can secure a third season at North Carolina. If UNC’s performance mirrors last year’s struggles, his tenure could end by 2027.
