Multiple people, including children, were injured in a Thursday shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, police confirmed during a press conference. At least two victims have been hospitalized, and the suspected gunman is dead, according to Bend police spokesperson Sheila Miller.
Police responded to Silver Rail Elementary School at 1:02 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired outside a vehicle. By the time officers arrived on scene, the suspected assailant had been shot and killed inside the school building; it remains unclear who fired the fatal shot.
The suspected shooter’s identity has not been disclosed. Authorities have not confirmed the victims’ identities or ages beyond their initial statement regarding injured children.
“This is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend. It’s devastating,” Miller said.
Emergency officials are evacuating the elementary school, which enrolls approximately 400 students, room by room.
The shooting appeared to begin roughly one hour before the school day was scheduled to end.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek stated on social media that she is monitoring the situation. The FBI is assisting local authorities with the investigation, according to FBI Director Kash Patel.
