Bengals safety Jordan Battle stated before Sunday’s game that he had identified a tendency of Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis to pat the ball before throwing, and that he was going to use that tendency to time his breaks on Willis’s passes. At the time, it seemed like a foolish thing to say out loud, but Battle backed up his talk and intercepted Willis twice as the Bengals won.
Still, Willis doesn’t believe he has a tell.
Asked after the game about Battle’s comments, Willis indicated that he wasn’t even sure which opposing player had spoken, requesting clarification on which Bengals player had mentioned having a pattern.
“Who said that?” Willis asked.
A reporter answered, “Jordan Battle.”
Willis then pressed further, asking, “What number?” The reporter clarified that Battle wears No. 27, leaving Willis puzzled—he hadn’t realized Battle had intercepted both of his catches at all. Willis mistakenly recalled that linebacker Demetrius Knight, number 44, had gotten one of the takes.
“I thought Kenny knocked down once. Regardless, you insisted on taking credit for both. That simply lacks credence,” Willis protested.
When challenged, Willis argued that the turnovers bore no connection to any particular signal. During one attempt, Willis experienced a hand strike at release—a defensive hurdle—or worse on the following exchange, where pressure materialized to his left, prompting a rightward scramble and a direct toss to Battle.
“That isn’t a visual cue he utilized; he consistently deflected bad releases, allowing teammates to capitalize on tightball situations. These stops emerged from secondary errors rather than intentional signaling. I certainly never signaled on either catch. Both receptions lack any measurable connection to my movements.”
Willis admitted being informed about Battle’s remarks but dismissed their weight. “I acknowledged it briefly. Everyone bounces the ball across the field—it’s remarkably uncomplicated,” he said.
Despite recording two interceptions that proved decisive, the defense claims remain contested by the quarterback.
