Berlin Police Deploy Water Cannons to Cool Crowds Amid Record-Breaking Heatwave]
Berlin police employed an unconventional approach to combat extreme heat, deploying water cannons to spray crowds at major tourist and government sites. The specially adapted vehicles patrolled landmarks including the Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz, and the Reichstag building, providing relief to residents and visitors during the capital’s sweltering heatwave.
Germany has endured multiple days of scorching temperatures, with thermometer readings approaching and occasionally surpassing 40°C. The situation has been particularly challenging as overnight temperatures have remained persistently high across many regions, offering little relief from the heat.
According to preliminary data from the German Weather Service, the previous night marked Germany’s warmest since meteorological records began. The highest reading was recorded in Kubschütz, Saxony, where temperatures never fell below 29.4°C overnight. During the day, a provisional peak of 41.5°C was recorded in Möckern-Drewitz, Saxony-Anhalt, at 16:20 on Saturday.
Sunday is expected to represent the heatwave’s apex, with the DWD forecasting extremely high temperatures between 37°C and 41°C. Thunderstorms developing overnight into Monday could bring heavy rain, hail, and strong gusts of wind in certain areas.
Cooler conditions will arrive beginning Monday night, with temperatures dropping to between 19°C and 23°C. Monday itself will see highs of only 27°C to 31°C, accompanied by periods of rain and isolated thunderstorms.
