For 32-year-old professional Alistair Docherty, one early golfing experience established two enduring principles. Speaking on this week’s GOLF Subpar podcast, the upcoming 2027 PGA Tour cardholder recounted how a visit to Sahalee Country Club significantly influenced his perspective.
Sahalee, a private facility in Sammamish, Wash., located just outside Seattle, hosted the 2010 U.S. Senior Open. It also served as the site of the 1998 PGA Championship, which Vijay Singh claimed. During the 2010 Senior Open, Docherty attended alongside his father, securing a viewing position near the 10th tee.
It was there that Bernhard Langer arrived and drove his tee shot directly into one of the numerous evergreens dotting the famously wooded layout.
“I looked at my dad and I’m like, ‘Wow, pros hit bad shots too,’” Docherty recalled. However, observing elite players miss wasn’t the primary takeaway; the subsequent result mattered more. “I’m like, ‘What’s going to happen now?’ Well, he won that week. So a bad shot doesn’t really determine the outcome. … And to be fair, if anyone’s been up to Sahalee, it’s called Sah-hallway for a reason.”
Docherty details the full story in the podcast episode embedded below.
