The Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday that commissioner Tony Petitti has agreed to a five-year contract extension, securing his leadership through June 2033.
The Big Ten’s council of presidents and chancellors unanimously approved the contract extension. Financial terms were not disclosed.
“Tony has provided exceptional vision for the Conference during extraordinarily challenging periods,” said Big Ten council of presidents and chancellors chair and Indiana University President Pamela Whitton. “We are grateful for his leadership and value his commitment to innovation and collaboration as we continue to shape the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics.”
Bringing extensive experience from his previous roles as deputy commissioner and CEO of Major League Baseball, where he also served as a top executive at MLB Network, Petitti assumed leadership of the Big Ten Conference in 2023 as its seventh commissioner. He succeeded Kevin Warren, who departed to take charge as president and CEO of the NFL’s Chicago Bears franchise.
Under Petitti’s guidance, the Big Ten has expanded its membership to 18 institutions, with the additions of the University of Oregon, University of Washington, University of Southern California, and UCLA in 2024.
In competitive action, the Big Ten has achieved remarkable success by securing the last three national championships in football — Michigan in 2023, Ohio State in 2024, and Indiana in 2025 — along with the current year’s titles in both men’s and women’s basketball, claimed by Michigan and UCLA respectively.
