These AI applications holdings feature durable competitive advantages, reasonable valuations, and appear well-positioned to withstand potential market volatility in the AI sector.
The quarterly release of Form 13F filings represents one of the most anticipated events for the investing community. These regulatory documents offer a concise overview of the stock purchases and sales made by leading institutional investors, including Pershing Square‘s billionaire founder, Bill Ackman.
What distinguishes Ackman’s investment approach is notably high portfolio concentration. While Ackman has long favored concentrating his fund’s capital in his highest-conviction ideas, a significant portion of these positions now relates to artificial intelligence. As of the quarter ending June, Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) together represented 44.4% of Pershing Square’s $19.5 billion investment portfolio.

Pershing Square’s billionaire founder targets AI applications pioneers
Many of the world’s wealthiest investors have pursued opportunities in hardware companies powering AI infrastructure for hyperscalers. However, Ackman has chosen to focus on AI applications pioneers, and there are compelling reasons for this strategy.
Historical precedent demonstrates that transformative innovations over the past three decades have consistently experienced early-stage corrections. Should investors once again overestimate the speed of adoption and optimization of this emerging technology, AI infrastructure stocks would likely face the most significant impact.

In contrast, companies deploying or integrating AI solutions on existing platforms would likely experience far less disruption if market conditions shifted. Cloud computing services for Microsoft and Amazon should continue their growth trajectories, while Meta’s social media platforms would remain attractive advertising channels.
All four of these businesses possess sustainable competitive moats:
These advantages provide durable market positioning and generally reliable operating cash flow generation.
AI applications stocks also offer fundamental appeal given the historically elevated valuation levels across the broader market. As of August 21st’s market close, forward price-to-earnings ratios for this group stand as follows:
- Uber: 17
- Microsoft: 20.5
- Amazon: 24.7
- Meta: 16.2
While Amazon’s forward P/E ratio may appear elevated relative to peers, the company trades at a historically low forward price-to-cash-flow multiple. Given Amazon’s substantial reinvestment of operating cash flow into its fastest-growing business segments, cash flow metrics may provide a more appropriate valuation framework.
While many billionaire investors have concentrated on AI infrastructure plays, Bill Ackman has positioned Pershing Square to benefit from the transformation enabled by AI applications across multiple industries.
