Despite an active in-ring career, Billy Gunn has expanded his contributions behind the scenes in both All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling (MLPW). With a 37-year tenure in the industry, the veteran leverages his expertise to support both promotions in multiple capacities.
In a recent interview with Denise Salcedo, Gunn elaborated on his backstage involvement with MLPW, highlighting the trust Scott D’Amore, the promotion’s owner, places in his work ethic. He praised the collaborative environment, comparing its dynamic to AEW’s culture of collective effort to produce quality content.
“The atmosphere is enjoyable and rewarding. I’m fortunate that Tony (Khan) and AEW allow me to pursue opportunities like this. Scott has complete confidence in me, and I deeply respect what he’s building. His approach is bold and unconventional, but it’s working—the shows are strong, the talent is exceptional, and there’s a unified drive to create a compelling product. It mirrors AEW’s philosophy, and I’m thrilled to contribute to that vision.”
Gunn detailed his hands-on role at MLPW, emphasizing flexibility and dedication. “My responsibilities range from coaching and producing to performing and assisting with logistics. Whether it’s training talent, crafting promos, handling catering, or even helping dismantle the ring—I embrace every task. If Scott needs someone to observe matches or guide performers post-fight, I’m there. The mindset is collaborative; no role is beneath me.”
He echoed similar sentiments about his AEW duties, stating, “I adapt to whatever the promotion requires. I’m not driven by personal ambition—I just want to contribute where I can. My ability to handle diverse responsibilities has allowed me to stay relevant in this industry. Not everyone may follow my direction, but as long as they absorb feedback and find their own path, it’s a success.”
While maintaining his status as an active AEW competitor, Gunn’s backstage influence continues to grow across both organizations. His multifaceted role underscores a commitment to fostering talent and maintaining high production standards in professional wrestling.
