In brief

  • On August 28, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced $201.9 million in net outflows, ending a nine-day inflow streak and reducing cumulative inflows to approximately $55.1 billion.
  • This pause interrupts an otherwise impressive period, during which the funds accumulated $2.8 billion over eight days as Bitcoin tested the $80,000 mark, including the largest single-day influx since May. Daily inflows frequently exceeded $300 million, peaking above $600 million on August 20.
  • Conversely, Ethereum ETFs showed no signs of fatigue, attracting $102.1 million to extend their 10-day inflow streak and push cumulative inflows to approximately $12.9 billion.

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds concluded a nine-day winning streak on Friday, recording outflows even as their Ethereum counterparts continued to attract fresh capital.

An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is an investment vehicle that holds an underlying asset and trades on a traditional stock exchange, enabling investors to buy and sell shares through standard brokerage accounts. A spot Bitcoin ETF holds actual Bitcoin, with each share representing a claim on a portion of the underlying asset. This structure provides investors with indirect exposure to Bitcoin’s price movements without the complexities of direct ownership.

This convenience has been a primary driver of the funds’ appeal to traditional and institutional investors, fueling a remarkable trajectory since their launch. Debuting in January 2024 following years of regulatory rejections, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs rapidly ascended to become some of the fastest-growing funds in history.

In the current market, daily flows fluctuate between heavy accumulation and sharp withdrawals in tandem with price volatility and the macroeconomic backdrop. Consequently, market observers monitor these flows closely as a barometer for broader investor sentiment.

Friday’s outflow caps an otherwise robust run for the funds. Bitcoin ETFs had accumulated $2.8 billion over an eight-day streak as Bitcoin tested the $80,000 threshold, previously recording their largest single-day intake since May. During that streak, daily inflows repeatedly surpassed $300 million, reaching a peak above $600 million on August 20.

Ethereum ETFs, by contrast, exhibited no such fatigue. The funds attracted $102.1 million on August 28, extending their 10-day inflow streak per SoSoValue, and lifting cumulative net inflows to approximately $12.9 billion against $13.8 billion in total net assets.

Decrypt’s tracker maintained its Ethereum reading at “bullish.” This steady demand marks a notable shift, as Ethereum products have in recent sessions nearly matched or rivaled Bitcoin’s daily intake despite managing a significantly smaller asset base.

The diverging flows coincided with a slip in Bitcoin’s price following hawkish remarks by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole, which tempered a rally that had pushed the token toward $80,000. Bitcoin subsequently recovered to around $79,000 over the weekend.

The single-day outflow is modest relative to the tens of billions the funds have amassed since launching, and the interruption of this streak does not necessarily signal a broader reversal in institutional appetite, which has remained robust across both assets.
