While traditional stocks and shares may offer stability, recent analysis challenges the notion that Bitcoin is inherently riskier. According to a study by crypto asset manager Grayscale, Bitcoin’s realized volatility has fallen within the historical range of S&P 500 constituents, with many large-cap equities exhibiting greater price fluctuations.
Bitcoin’s price rally in August and September marked its strongest performance in years, fueling optimism among analysts who now see signs of a sustained bull market.
“As the asset class matures, supported by deeper liquidity, expanded institutional involvement, and regulated trading platforms, its price volatility has narrowed significantly from the extreme swings of its early years,” noted Grayscale’s head of research, Zach Pandl, in a recent analysis.
“This evolution shifts the conversation from ‘should we own this volatile asset?’ to ‘how should we size our exposure?’” Pandl added. Over the past year, Bitcoin’s volatility has declined to 43%, down from an average of 64% over the past decade and 81% five years ago.
Bitcoin’s volatility now falls below that of only 19% of S&P 500 constituents. “For investors accustomed to equity volatility, Bitcoin’s price movements may be less intimidating than previously assumed,” the report stated.
K33 Research data indicates that 2025 has been Bitcoin’s least volatile year to date. Historically, Bitcoin was notorious for dramatic price swings, including over 80% drawdowns within months during its formative years.
Increased investor participation, particularly after the 2024 approval of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, has made large price movements increasingly difficult to execute. At one point in 2026, Bitcoin dropped more than 50% from its October all-time high of $126,080. It has since recovered, trading at approximately $82,531, remaining 35% below its peak.
August’s price surge was partly driven by U.S. Treasury announcements expanding its liquidity-support buyback programs. The so-called “debasement trade,” where investors hedge against a weakening currency by purchasing assets like Bitcoin, has regained popularity amid dollar weakness.
