New Zealand Cricket announced that BJ Watling will become the Black Caps’ batting coach starting in early December 2026, succeeding Luke Ronchi. Ronchi has left his role to take the head‑coach job at Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, ending a six‑year tenure with New Zealand after the ongoing Test series against India concludes.
The 41‑year‑old Watling will join the Black Caps support staff on 16 November 2026, assisting Ronchi during a transition phase before taking full charge when the team leaves for a four‑Test tour of Australia. Ronchi has been in charge of batting since 2020, when he replaced Peter Fulton.
Watling expressed enthusiasm, saying, “I’m incredibly excited to return to the team and work with this current group; it’s a special opportunity I don’t take lightly. What this side and the support staff have achieved together over recent years has been remarkable, and I look forward to contributing to a world‑class side.” The remarks were reported by The New Zealand Herald.
What experience does Watling add to New Zealand’s batting unit?
Watling retired from international cricket after New Zealand’s 2021 World Test Championship final triumph. Over his career he played 108 matches for the Black Caps across all formats, including 75 Tests in which he scored 3,790 runs at an average of 37.52. All eight of his Test centuries came in victories for New Zealand.
In first‑class cricket he amassed over 10,000 runs from 178 innings, scoring 18 centuries. Watling also co‑holds the world record for the sixth‑wicket partnership of 365 runs, achieved with Kane Williamson against Sri Lanka in 2015.
Following his retirement, Watling transitioned to coaching, starting with Wellington before moving to Northern Districts. With Northern Districts he captured the Plunket Shield in 2025 and the Super Smash title in 2026, a run of back‑to‑back domestic successes that bolstered his credentials for the national coaching role.
How did New Zealand’s Test captain react to the coaching change?
New Zealand Test captain Tom Latham publicly endorsed the appointment, noting that only one player in the Black Caps’ preferred Test top six is under 30. He emphasized that Watling’s extensive high‑level experience makes him an excellent fit for the group.
Latham added, “BJ is a guy who personified what it means to be a Black Cap; having him return to the group will be great for our environment. There was never any doubt about his effort and determination whenever he stepped onto the field, and I’m confident that same attitude will translate into his coaching style.”
