BMW has introduced its latest X5 lineup, featuring a fully electric variant for the first time. The iX5 60 xDrive combines substantial range and performance with a bold new design that includes distinctive “X”-shaped headlights.
Bmw is implementing a unified platform strategy for the X5, moving away from separate architectures for electric and internal combustion engines. This approach allows the vehicle to accommodate multiple powertrains—including gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen—awithout compromise. The platform represents BMW’s “Neue Klasse” design philosophy.
The iX5 60 xDrive utilizes BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology with a 140kWh battery and 800-volt architecture, delivering up to 435 miles of EPA-estimated range. This positions it among the longest-range vehicles in North America, surpassing most competitors except for heavy-duty pickups like the Chevrolet Silverado EV 8WT. The vehicle supports 450kW bi-directional charging, potentially reaching 80 percent charge in approximately 20 minutes at maximum power.

Performance specifications include dual electric motors producing 570 horsepower total (325 hp rear, 245 hp front), enabling 0-62 mph acceleration in 4.7 seconds. Despite weighing 6,371 pounds—making it BMW’s heaviest regular production vehicle—the iX5 achieves strong performance through its powertrain configuration.
The vehicle features comprehensive chassis technology including full air suspension, with optional active anti-roll bars and four-wheel steering for enhanced driving dynamics. Design highlights include button-operated “winglet” door handles replacing traditional handles, and the elimination of the split folding tailgate and iDrive controller knob.
Exterior styling presents a more angular interpretation of the X5 form, with pronounced creases and flared fenders. The front-end incorporates vertically aligned kidney grilles with the “Iconic Glow” feature shared across Neue Klasse models.

The interior showcases a 17.9-inch center touchscreen with an optional 14.6-inch passenger display, complemented by BMW’s new vertical-spoke steering wheel. Audio systems range from a standard 12-speaker 280-watt configuration to an optional Bowers & Wilkins Dolby Atmos system delivering up to 775 watts.
Information and connectivity are managed through BMW’s Operating System X, built on Android Open-Source Project, featuring extensive app, video, and gaming capabilities. Standard connectivity includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
Pricing for the fully-electric iX5 60 eDrive starts at $79,800 excluding destination charges, with availability expected by the end of 2026. The plug-in hybrid X5 50e starts at $77,500, while the conventional X5 40 begins at $69,800.
