Royal Ascot opens on Tuesday with a thrilling renewal of the Queen Anne Stakes and a showdown between two Guineas winners in the St James’s Palace Stakes.
2.30 Royal Ascot – Notable Speech Leads the Queen Anne Stakes
Five‑time Group One winner Notable Speech fronts the opening Queen Anne Stakes, kicking off an action‑packed week at the Royal racecourse.
Charlie Appleby’s colt arrives in prime condition after a dominant Group One Lockinge victory at Newbury last month. Backed heavily, he surged clear of the field and will face four of the same rivals again. William Buick’s mount was trapped behind runners in last year’s race; a cleaner run this time could see him challenge for the win.
Leading the field is Docklands, returning to his favored track where he has already claimed three wins, including two at Royal Ascot. Harry Eustace’s colt follows a Doncaster Mile triumph and a third‑place finish in Sha Tin’s Champions Mile in April.
Opera Dance represents Godolphin, ridden by Billy Loughnane. He is the highest‑rated entry, having recently captured the Group One Jebel Hatta and the Bet365 Mile (carrying a penalty).
William Haggas’s More Thunder is another strong contender after a impressive run in the Lockinge, finishing a close second. Karl Burke’s Zeus Olympios will look to make his debut at this level under trainer Clifford Lee.
3.05 Royal Ascot – Australian Runner Overpass Targets King Charles III Stakes
Overpass has traveled from Australia to contest the King Charles III Stakes, featuring a field of 26 vying for a £396,970 purse – the largest lineup since 2006.
Seven‑year‑old gelding Bjorn Baker’s veteran is on his 15th Group One start and has placed three times at this level, finishing fourth behind world‑class Ka Ying Rising in the Everest last October. A repeat performance could see him near the front again.
Last year’s winner American Affair rebounded at Haydock, finishing second to the improving Night Raider, who is unbeaten after being gelded. Karl Burke’s entry will break sharply from the gates for Wathnan Racing.
Overpass’s connections hope to follow the path of Asfora, the 2024 victor. Henry Dwyer’s star mare will seek to regain form against rivals such as Rayevka, Big Mojo and Space Star.
4.20 Royal Ascot – Bow Echo vs Gstaad in the St James’s Palace Stakes
The day’s headline clash arrives at 4.20 pm as 2000 Guineas winner Bow Echo meets Irish Guineas champion Gstaad in a highly anticipated St James’s Palace Stakes.
Bow Echo is unbeaten in four starts, having dominated the 2000 Guineas with a decisive victory. Rated 126, he ranks among the nation’s top horses, and trainer George Boughey believes he has further improved.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Gstaad, who finished three lengths behind Bow Echo at Newmarket, is not to be discounted. Coolmore asserts that the colt has progressed, evidenced by his Irish Guineas triumph. Aidan O’Brien’s three‑year‑olds often improve as the season advances, and if Gstaad can close the gap in the home straight, the race could turn classic.

Talk Of New York remains lightly raced, with only four starts but three wins, including a decisive Listed Heron Stakes victory at Sandown. He could be a serious threat if he shows further improvement.
Best of the Rest
Ballydoyle partners Confucius and Great Barrier Reef head the market for the Group Two Coventry Stakes at 3.05 pm, joined by debut winner Royal Heritage for Wathnan Racing. Night In Vegas is another strong contender despite a wide draw in stall 21.
HM the King and Queen are represented by Reaching High, the market favourite for the 5 pm Ascot Stakes. Fresh from an MBE award, Ryan Moore takes the mount. Later, Haatem aims for back‑to‑back wins in the Listed Wolferton Stakes, followed by Valiancy targeting the Copper Horse Stakes for trainer William Haggas.
