Giant manta rays, the world’s largest ray species, remain enigmatic in many aspects of their reproductive habits. Researchers have long struggled to understand where these majestic creatures give birth and how their offspring develop in the open ocean. However, a groundbreaking study conducted in Mexico has shed new light on this mysterious aspect of their lives.
Dr. Madalena Cabral, a marine ecologist at Mares de México Giant Manta Project, led two expeditions in Revillagigedo National Park, 250 miles off Baja California in Mexico. With the help of her team, she conducted dives to locate female manta rays and used a touchless ultrasound technique to detect pregnancies in these animals. The ultrasound images were recorded on an iPhone 15 in a waterproof housing, allowing the researchers to track the movements of the fetus in real-time.
The study revealed that giant manta rays are pregnant for about a year, giving birth to only one pup every four to five years. This slow reproductive cycle makes each pregnancy incredibly valuable. Dr. Cabral and her team were able to confirm pregnancies in three giant mantas, named Timshel, Ophelia, and Grecia. These mantas were tagged with satellite trackers to monitor their movements during this critical stage of their lives.
Previously, scientists relied on externally visible signs of pregnancy to identify pregnant mantas. However, one of the study’s three pregnant mantas, Timshel, showed no outward signs of pregnancy. This highlights the importance of using ultrasound technology to accurately detect pregnancies in these elusive creatures.
The use of ultrasound technology on giant manta rays is a first in marine biology. While the same technique has been used on smaller species of reef manta rays in the past, this study marks a significant advancement in understanding the reproductive habits of these magnificent creatures.
Dr. Joshua Stewart, a marine ecologist at Oregon State University, praised the study, stating that the ultrasound images were “extremely cool.” He added that the study was the first to clearly capture the developmental stages of a manta fetus.
The research team hopes that by identifying more pregnant females, they will be able to track their movements and gain a better understanding of their reproductive habits. This could have significant implications for the conservation of this endangered species.
