Accidental name‑buttings happen often, but few imagine a professional athlete at the centre of such a mix‑up. During the latest installment of Golf’s Subpar Podcast, former NHL star Brenden Morrow shared a vivid recollection of a round at TPC Craig Ranch with co‑host Colt Knost and guest Gary Woodland, during which he mistakenly referred to Woodland as “Jerry” whenever anyone recognised his name.
When Morrow saw his bag and read “Gary,” frustration sparked. Yet despite the clear inconsistency, he kept calling him Jerry for the entire round. Afterward he drove Woodland to North Park Mall, where Gabby, then Woodland’s partner at the time, dropped him off with a brief “Heck of a time—catch you later.” No one ever corrected the mistake, so Woodland entered league lore as “Jerry Woodland.”
“I can read [his bag],” Morrow told Knost and Drew Stoltz as he launched into the anecdote. “I thought his name was Gary. I was certain I’d been wrong when I heard someone call him Jerry. So I asked, ‘Who am I?’ It was already printed on his bag as ‘Gary.’ Perhaps his parents simply chose that nickname—or his teammates influenced him. Nevertheless, I persisted in calling him Jerry throughout the round, and no one corrected me for staying insistent.”
At that time they placed a $10,000 bet that Morrow would win the Stanley Cup before Woodland claimed a major. Morrow ultimately fell short as the Tampa Bay Lightning reached the final series in his last professional season in 2015, while Woodland captured the prestigious 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. The wager remains unpaired, though Morrow hopes to finally settle scores by inviting Woodland as a member guest instead of demanding payment.
