England head coach Brendon McCullum has provided a positive update regarding Jofra Archer‘s fitness, fueling speculation about the fast bowler’s return to red-ball cricket ahead of the second Test against New Zealand. Although Archer is expected to be available for selection later this month, McCullum emphasized that availability does not guarantee a spot in the starting XI, as the team intends to tailor their attack based on current form and pitch conditions.
McCullum Provides Progress Report on Archer’s Recovery
Archer missed the opening Test at Lord’s as the team management opted not to rush his return following his stint with the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. Instead, the pace bowler has been adhering to a strict workload-management program in Barbados to prepare for his comeback. Following England’s win in the series opener, McCullum expressed confidence in Archer’s progress and the rigor of his preparation.
“We’re hopeful he will be available for the second Test; then we’ll work out conditions-wise where we’re at. He’s following a plan. We completely trust Jof. He’s shown us in the past what he does, which is get himself ready based on the plans we get together and come up with. He’s always turned up in the condition we wanted from him,” McCullum stated.
Squad Inclusion Does Not Guarantee a Starting Role
Despite the optimism, McCullum stressed that Archer’s return to the squad will not automatically secure him a place in the lineup. The management plans to evaluate the conditions at The Oval before finalizing the bowling attack, prioritizing tactical suitability over reputation.
This cautious approach follows the dominant performance of England’s current seamers in the first Test. Gus Atkinson, Ollie Robinson, and Josh Tongue dismantled New Zealand’s batting order, claiming 19 wickets collectively to secure a convincing victory. McCullum also noted the increasing depth of England’s fast-bowling options, acknowledging several players currently fighting for a spot.
“Sonny Baker was close, as well. We thought if air-speed was going to be important and the pitch was going to be flat, he would be a viable option. Fish [Matthew Fisher] has been bowling beautifully, then you’ve got Jofra and Brydon Carse,” McCullum added.
