A British woman has tragically lost her life in the Bahamas while attempting to rescue her two sons after a powerful underwater current swept them away during a snorkeling excursion. The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed they are investigating her death, which occurred on Tuesday.
According to authorities, the incident took place near the southern tip of Bimini Island, where the woman was snorkeling with her husband and children. The strong current separated the children from the group, prompting the woman to pursue them. She was subsequently swept away herself. Both children were eventually recovered from the water.
Bimini, a small island located between Andros and Miami, is renowned for its maritime history and scientific research facilities, including the world-famous shark research center. Authorities reported that the woman was found unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock shortly after 10 a.m. local time and was rushed to a nearby clinic, where she was pronounced dead despite resuscitation efforts. Investigators confirmed no foul play is suspected in the incident.
The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated they are working closely with local authorities to provide support to the bereaved family. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the precise cause of death.
