Twenty-five years after Britney Spears commanded the MTV Video Music Awards stage with a python draped across her shoulders, the Neptunes-produced single “I’m a Slave 4 U” is experiencing a striking resurgence — driven almost entirely by listeners who weren’t alive when it premiered.

New data from Spotify reveals that Gen Z — defined as those born between 1997 and 2012 — now accounts for over 55 percent of global streams for the track in the past month. Even more remarkably, 27 percent of those streams come from users born after the song’s 2001 debut. The platform also reports more than 40 million “discoveries” across Spears’ catalog this year, with 60 percent of those first-time or returning listeners belonging to the younger generation.

The track, which marked a bold sonic departure from the polished teen-pop of Spears’ first two albums, continues to demonstrate remarkable staying power. Spotify notes that streams spike annually around the anniversary of the VMA performance, and anticipation is building again ahead of the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.

“I’m a Slave 4 U” served as the lead single from Britney, Spears’ third studio album, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this October. The record debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making Spears the first female artist to have her first three studio albums enter the chart at the top position. Britney has since sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
