Leg-spinner Adil Rashid is set to miss the opening match of the three‑series ODI series against Sri Lanka due to a hand injury.
With Jacob Bethell still sidelined after knee surgery, Tom Banton will open the batting.
England dominated Sri Lanka in a one‑sided T20 series, winning 3‑0 last week. The side has been outstanding in the shortest format, securing 23 wins from their last 26 completed internationals.
However, the next global tournament is the 50‑over World Cup in southern Africa scheduled for October and November 2027, and Brook has indicated that 50‑over cricket will now take precedence.
“Naturally it does, with the World Cup being next year,” Brook said.
“That does not mean we are de‑prioritising T20 cricket at all, as we are currently excelling in that format.”
“With the World Cup just around the corner and our qualification now secured, we can really start to focus on finalizing the squad and starting XI.”
Tuesday’s match in Durham will mark England’s first ODI since Kevin Pietersen joined the coaching staff.
Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has been recruited as a mentor for the 50‑over World Cup build‑up. On Monday he led a training session focusing on playing spin bowling.
Brook’s side will continue playing white‑ball cricket through to the Test tour of South Africa in December.
After the series against Sri Lanka concludes on Sunday, England will travel to Pakistan in October for a one‑day tri‑series that also features Sri Lanka.
In November England head to Australia for three ODIs and five T20 matches against their Ashes opponents.
The T20 series in Australia ends a week before England’s sole warm‑up game in South Africa.
Given the tight schedule, some of the multi‑format fast bowlers are likely to be rested for the T20 series in Australia, providing a break for the likes of Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson and possibly Sonny Baker.
The squads for the tours of Pakistan and Australia are expected to be announced next week, along with a new batch of central contracts. The group slated to tour South Africa for head coach Fleming’s first series will be confirmed in October.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Trott has been appointed England Lions head coach for their winter tours of the West Indies, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
Former England batter Trott’s four‑year tenure as coach of Afghanistan concluded in February.
Having been a contender for the England Test coaching role before Craig Fleming was appointed in July, Trott now replaces Andrew Flintoff, who stepped down in August.
