Following a disappointing loss to Pakistan in the tri-series opener at the same venue on Tuesday, Harry Brook had challenged his batting unit to adopt a more aggressive mindset. Two days later, he delivered a masterclass in exactly that approach.
Brook’s innings was a spectacle of calculated aggression. Across a 116-ball vigil, he blended audacious innovation with brute force and delicate placement, dismantling the attack to all corners of the ground. His final tally of 31 boundaries comprised 10 towering sixes and 21 fours.
The knock was defined by a perfectly timed acceleration. After a watchful start yielding just 13 runs from his first 24 deliveries, Brook shifted gears to reach his half-century in 42 balls and brought up his fourth ODI hundred off 75. The true devastation followed the three-figure mark: he doubled his hundred in a scarcely believable 39 balls.
Brook found able support after openers Tom Banton (50) and Ben Duckett (29) laid the platform. A third-wicket stand of 159 with Joe Root (69) steadied the ship before England unleashed Will Jacks at number five. The move sparked a ferocious, unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 185 runs in just 79 balls, with Jacks racing to an unbeaten 66 off 25 deliveries for his half-century.
As England plundered 156 runs in the final 10 overs, Brook surpassed Ben Stokes’ national record with a whipped six over the leg side off Dilshan Madushanka. Seemingly unfazed by the milestone, Brook offered no celebration and, moments later, survived a difficult chance at mid-off on 185.
Beginning the final over on 186, Brook launched the first delivery from Janith Liyanage over cover for six before scrambling two improbable twos. The historic double hundred arrived fittingly via a paddled sweep, with Jacks already celebrating at the non-striker’s end before the ball kissed the rope.
Two balls later, Brook spliced the final delivery of the innings to third man, walking off arm-in-arm with Jacks after an innings that announced a new era of English batting dominance.
