Bryson DeChambeau has experienced a surprising trend this season, missing the cut in all major tournaments. However, he appears poised to make the weekend at the 2026 Open Championship held at Royal Birkdale after an opening round of 67 on Thursday. While his second round was ongoing at noon ET, early indicators suggest he remains in contention.
Other top contenders haven’t been as fortunate.
2026 Open Championship Projected Cut and Rules
The Open Championship field consists of 156 players, with the 36-hole cut set for the top 70 players plus ties. Note that there is no 10-shot rule in effect. At Royal Portrush last year, the cut line was one over par.
According to Data Golf projections as of noon ET on Friday, there is a 93% probability the cut will be one over, 6% chance of even par, and 1% chance of two over par.
Major Champions in Jeopardy of Missing the Cut
Several recent major winners are already facing elimination. 2019 U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland sits at 10 over through 14 holes, while 2022 U.S. Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick concluded his round at four over. Two-time U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, who won last month’s Shinnecock Hills Open, finished at three over. This year’s PGA Championship victor, Aaron Rai, is also in danger after posting two over.
Additional players hovering near the projected cut line include Justin Thomas at one over through seven holes, Rickie Fowler at one over through 16 holes, and Jordan Spieth at four over through seven holes. Viktor Hovland, winner of the recent Travelers Championship, is three over through eight holes, while Tom Kim, who claimed victory at the Genesis Scottish Open the previous week, finished three over.
