The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed forward Beck Malenstyn to a six-year contract worth $17.5 million, doing so two days before his impending unrestricted free agency.
Malenstyn, 28, joined the Sabres in the 2024-25 campaign following his acquisition from the Washington Capitals. In his first two seasons with Buffalo, he recorded 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists) while establishing himself as a physical presence. His 2025-26 campaign yielded a career-high seven goals.
Malenstyn’s impact extended far beyond the scoresheet. He set a franchise record during the 2025-26 season with 282 hits, ranking fifth in the NHL, and finished second on the team with 75 blocked shots. The winger also registered the fastest skated speed recorded since the NHL Edge era began in 2021-22, reaching 24.94 mph in a March matchup against his former team, the Capitals.
“Being somebody that tries to play that heavy, hard, fast, physical game all the time, I think there are moments where you maybe create a little bit more space for yourself and don’t take advantage of them,” Malenstyn said. “… I think I was able to take a step in that direction this year, create a little bit more offense when I was on the ice.”
The new deal averages $2.9 million annually, more than doubling his previous salary of $1.35 million with Buffalo.
Malenstyn contributed to the Sabres’ breakthrough 14-year playoff drought ending in 2025-26, though their run concluded in the second round against the Montreal Canadiens.
