Bungie Reverses Course on Destiny 2, Announces Plans to Restore Vaulted Content

After appearing to step away from Destiny 2, Bungie has revealed plans to bring back previously vaulted content, including campaigns, destinations, and raids. This move effectively reverses the Destiny Content Vault initiative the studio launched six years ago, which had controversially removed older material that players had purchased.

“We understand that removing these experiences had a lasting impact on player trust and enjoyment of Destiny,” Bungie acknowledged. “We cannot change the decision we made, but we can acknowledge its impact and do the work to make it right by restoring these important parts of Destiny‘s history.”

All Destiny 2 players will regain access to the vaulted content, though the process is far from straightforward. Bungie implemented significant changes to the game with the Beyond Light expansion, meaning it must revisit and update the lighting, encounters, combatants, and underlying systems tied to this older content. “That work will take time, but it is necessary to ensure returning content meets the stability and gameplay standards of Destiny 2 today,” said Bungie.

The decision to restore this content follows closely on the heels of a “Sunrise” Destiny 2 offline preservation mod, which allowed players to explore older vaulted areas — though not the full campaigns and missions they had originally experienced.

Bungie described its restoration effort as the “first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve.” While speculation has circulated about a potential Destiny 3 sequel — especially given recent fan demands during high-profile Twitch streams — the studio made no mention of such a project, committing only to building a “stronger long-term future for Destiny.”

In addition to its Destiny 2 plans, Bungie conceded that Marathon, its extraction shooter, did not “reach as many players as we had hoped, and we also know and understand that the game needs to evolve.” As a result, Marathon is expected to shift further toward a survival-oriented experience. While details remain limited, the studio clearly recognizes that significant changes are needed if the title is to become a sustainable project going forward.
