Andy Burnham has confirmed he will not call an early general election if he becomes Prime Minister following the upcoming Labour leadership contest.
During a live Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, Burnham addressed public queries regarding his potential ascent to the premiership, stating unequivocally that he intends to adhere to the existing 2024 electoral timeline outlined in the Labour manifesto.
Burnham, who secured victory in the Makerfield by-election, currently stands as the sole declared candidate to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as Labour leader, with the potential to assume the role of Prime Minister on 20 July.
The UK’s last general election took place on 4 July 2024, resulting in a Labour landslide, officially setting the next election deadline for August 2029. However, constitutional conventions allow a Prime Minister to request an early election at any point before this statutory limit.
The AMA, which attracted significant public engagement, saw Burnham field questions on a range of policy issues, including immigration and EU relations. Notably, Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch challenged Burnham to engage more directly with the media, criticizing his limited public statements since announcing his leadership bid.
In response, Burnham highlighted his recent extensive public engagement in Makerfield, emphasizing his readiness to address scrutiny. He also addressed policy specifics, including his support for maintaining the triple lock on state pensions and pursuing closer ties with the European Union without revisiting Brexit debates.
