A man in his 40s suffered severe injuries after being stabbed in north Belfast early Tuesday, as authorities apprehended a Sudanese migrant on attempted murder charges. The assault occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Kinnaird Avenue, leaving the community in shock. Police recovered a kitchen knife from the scene, which the victim described as “extremely violent,” according to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). His injuries include wounds to his face, neck, back, and eyes. Surveillance footage shows civilians bravely intervening, including one individual using a hurling stick to apprehend the attacker. PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson lauded the bystanders as “heroic,” stating their actions “undoubtedly saved lives,” per BBC reports.

The man, in his 30s, arrived in Northern Ireland via Dublin with temporary “leave to remain” authorization. Home Office officials are collaborating with police to verify details. Henderson noted the suspect had no prior criminal history, though investigations into his background are ongoing. Officials reiterated no evidence suggests terrorism as a motive, though the inquiry remains classified as critical.

Political figures amplified concerns over immigration policies. Alan Mendoza, director of the Henry Jackson Society, criticized the UK’s “broken border controls,” asserting the suspect “should never have been permitted entry.” He called for stricter vetting processes and reduced migrant admissions.
