Caitlin Clark was visibly upset following a contentious foul call during the Fever’s recent defeat.
In Wednesday’s 88‑75 loss to the Valkyries in Indianapolis, Clark erupted at referee Gerda Gatling after officials missed a clear foul on Valkyries center Kiah Stokes during the second quarter.
While driving to the basket for a layup, Clark was struck by Stokes, resulting in a fall that went uncalled.
Clark rose from the ground appearing to be in pain, and shortly thereafter the officials assessed a foul on Fever center Aliyah Boston, prompting Clark’s heated exchange with Gatling.
Clark left the game for a medical evaluation and did not return until the second half of the 13‑point loss.
She finished with 13 points on 4‑of‑14 shooting and added four turnovers.
After the game, Clark disclosed she suffered a contusion on the disputed play and told reporters, “The ref can’t miss that, and then I have to play with a contusion in my leg the rest of the game. It’s ridiculous.”
Season statistics show Clark averaging 20.1 points per game, shooting 42.7% overall and 33.1% from three‑point range.
This episode marks another instance of Clark’s frustration with officiating this season.
On June 22, Clark drew a technical foul after clapping in response to a personal‑foul call against her, prompting a sharp rebuke of the decision.
She later told reporters, “It’s ridiculous. I got a technical for clapping. If any technical should be taken away, it should be that one.”

In a separate incident involving the Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas, a hit to Clark’s throat went initially uncalled but was later upgraded to a flagrant‑2 foul, resulting in a one‑game suspension for Thomas. The report sparked speculation about league actions.
The WNBA dismissed the story as “absolutely false.”
The Fever now sit at 14‑10, holding sixth place in the league.
