Cam Schlittler will not learn if he has won the American League Cy Young Award for another month, but the Yankees pitcher has already made clear that individual honors are secondary to team success.
Following the Yankees’ three-game sweep loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series, Schlittler emphasized that winning the award, which he is widely expected to do over Toronto’s Dylan Cease, would not be the defining memory of the season.
“The personal stuff, whatever happens, that’s great,” Schlittler said after the Yankees were eliminated at Yankee Stadium. “But at the end of the day, I’d rather win a championship.”
Despite his stellar first full season in the majors, Schlittler’s potential Cy Young win only highlights the Yankees’ failure to end a championship drought dating back to 2009.
