Cameron Young, currently ranked fourth globally, is among a cluster of players who are all 3-under par.
As the reigning Players Champion, Young had transformed his putting from a weakness into a formidable strength earlier this year. However, following his May victory at the Cadillac Championship, he had been averaging over a half-stroke deficit in putting compared to the field during 20 competitive rounds.
This trend reversed recently, as Young gained over a stroke and a half on the greens yesterday.
Over the past 20 rounds prior to this week, Young was averaging 68 feet of putts per round. At Royal Birkdale, however, his putting improved to over 132 feet.
An even-tempered American, Young now boasts seven top-10 finishes in major championships since early 2022—a leading tally among players without a major win. Could this be the week he secures his first?
