The inaugural Freedom 250 marks the series’ debut event and could serve as a decisive moment for the championship, as driver Àlex Palou stands on the verge of securing a near fourth consecutive INDYCAR title.

Palou has dominated the season, capturing victories at Grand Prix St. Petersburg, Long Beach, Detroit, Nashville’s Music City, and most recently Portland.

A victory for Palou, combined with a finish of ninth place or lower by Kyle Kirkwood, would lock in Palou’s championship. Should Palou not win, he still has three remaining opportunities: Milwaukee Mile Race 1, Milwaukee Mile Race 2, and the Grand Prix of Monterey.

After his Portland win, Palou extended his lead to 542 points, while Kirkwood trails by 133 points with 409 remaining. With the Freedom 250 approaching, Palou can further solidify his title.

Christian Lundgaard appeared on Thursday’s edition of First Things First to discuss expectations for Palou ahead of Sunday’s race.

“He has proven, by now, that he will not crack under pressure. We can try as hard as we want… To catch him is mathematically possible,” Lundgaard said on First Things First. “He is likely the best INDYCAR driver the series has seen… He simply keeps proving us all wrong.”

Although Palou is the favorite to claim his seventh win, other talented drivers remain formidable contenders for victory in Washington D.C.

Kirkwood will be a driver to watch on Sunday. Despite a decent showing at Markham—starting 22nd and finishing 21st—he remains in second place. His most recent win was in Arlington in March.

The Freedom 250 is scheduled to start Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ET on FOX, with the green flag for the main race expected around 1:13 p.m. ET.
