A 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in their final group match has ended Canada’s World Cup journey on home soil, though the co-hosts will still compete in the knockout rounds.
Canada’s second-place finish in Group B means they will relocate to Los Angeles for their round-of-32 fixture against South Africa, missing the chance to host additional matches in Vancouver.
Despite the setback, head coach Jesse Marsch emphasized his team’s resilience, stating: “While we preferred to stay in Vancouver, we have a significant opportunity ahead to inspire the nation from Los Angeles and deliver strong performances in the knockout stage.”
“We fell short in the group final, but we’re in the next round and will ensure we’re fully prepared,” Marsch added.
Canada began their campaign with a draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto, followed by a dominant 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver. The loss to Switzerland marked their first defeat in the tournament.
Striker Jonathan David reflected on the mixed emotions: “Playing in front of a passionate home crowd was incredible, and while we’re disappointed to leave Vancouver, we’ll regroup and focus on the challenges ahead.”
