Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Friday that he anticipates finalizing negotiations with the European Union by June, aiming to establish a groundbreaking partnership that would designate Canada as the bloc’s inaugural associate member. However, this specific title was omitted from the joint declaration that launched a new economic and security alliance.
Carney confirmed his attendance at an upcoming European leaders’ meeting in June to advance talks on this proposed relationship, which falls short of full EU membership.
“In a parallel effort, we are pursuing the most extensive partnership possible without full accession, positioning Canada as the EU’s inaugural Associate Member,” Carney stated.
