The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a nationwide recall of Heavenly Spices garlic powder sold at Dollarama stores across Canada due to potential bacterial contamination. The product may be contaminated with Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that can cause foodborne illness.
According to the CFIA, the recall was issued due to the risk of Bacillus cereus contamination, which can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and watery diarrhea. The recall applies to 70-gram containers of the product sold in stores and online.
“Residents are advised not to use, sell, serve, or distribute the affected product,” the CFIA stated in its recall notice. Consumers are urged to dispose of the product immediately and contact Dollarama Customer Service for a $2.00 e-gift card as a replacement.
The recall has been classified as a Class 2 event, indicating a moderate risk to health. This comes shortly after General Mills recalled over 735,000 packages of Pillsbury bread products over concerns about potential glass contamination.
Symptoms of Bacillus cereus infection typically resolve within 24 to 48 hours. The bacterium is often found in foods such as meat, stews, gravies, vanilla sauce, and cooked rice that have not been stored properly or left at room temperature for extended periods.

This marks the latest in a series of major food recalls, following the FDA’s recent notification about General Mills’ recall of bread products due to possible glass contamination. Additionally, Bloomberg reported that Taylor Farms is initiating a recall linked to ingredients involved in a multistate Cyclospora outbreak, though the company has clarified that its branded salad products are not implicated.
