Canadian Prime Minister Urges Vote for Unity Ahead of Imminent Alberta Separation Referendum Prime Minister Mark Carney has called on Albertans to vote for remaining in Canada ahead of an independence referendum, stressing that stakes are especially high. Delivering at a pro‑unity rally in Calgary on Thursday, Carney warned that the forthcoming referendum arrives poorly timed and appealed to residents to produce a decisive majority opposing separation. Over 450,000 Albertans have cast either early or absentee ballots, deciding whether the province should stay within Canada or initiate a formal independence referendum. Campaign groups across the political spectrum are intensifying their outreach ahead of Monday’s vote, despite polling indicating broad support for staying together. Nevertheless, Carney cautioned that actual voter turnout remains the ultimate determinant of the outcome. “Turnout will determine the outcome,” he told a crowd of more than 7,000 in Calgary. He also referenced external challenges, noting rising global division and perceived foreign influences as reasons to uphold unity. Thursday’s rally forms part of a series of pro‑unity gatherings the prime minister plans to attend across Alberta, including another event in Edmonton tomorrow—his hometown. Earlier in the day, Carney visited local businesses in Calgary and engaged pro‑unity volunteers in a mobilization effort to boost turnout.
