Renowned trainer Brian “BoMac” McIntyre warns that Canelo Alvarez could face a daunting challenge when he meets Christian Mbilli in October.
The navigate will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marking Canelo’s first fight since his loss to Terence Crawford last September.
After a unanimous decision that removed him from the 168‑pound title, Alvarez is now targeting the defense of a single division of the former undisputed championship.
Mbilli, who was promoted from interim to full WBC champion following Crawford’s retirement in December, is intent on solidifying his legacy.
Known for his high‑volume style, the Frenchman produced a riveting 10‑round draw with Lester Martinez on the undercard of Canelo‑Crawford.
Dessert as Martinez’s coach, ‘BoMac’ is well‑versed in Mbilli’s intensity and believes that could prove decisive against the 35‑year‑old Canelo.
McIntyre told FightHype that Alvarez may have been hesitant to accept this bout as part of his multi‑fight agreement with Turki Alalshikh.
“It’s no walk in the park for Canelo – I promise you that. Mbilli is a fighting motherf**ker, and he fights all the way to the end.
“Will his skills pull through or will Canelo’s skills pull through? That must be seen. If [Canelo wins]it’s probably going to take a toll on him.
“That motherf**ker Mbilli will fight you toe-to-toe. Does Canelo want that at this age? Probably not.
“Is he getting made to [take] fights like that with that guaranteed money [from Alalshikh]? Probably so.”
With Martinez defending his WBC ‘interim’ title against Luka Plantic on August 29, ‘BoMac’ hopes his client will face the victor of the Mbilli‑Canelo clash.
The American trainer has previously cornered both fighters in separate bouts and will likely bring that experience to guide Martinez to victory.
