Research from the Dog Aging Project indicates that dogs and humans exhibit comparable biological patterns linked to lifespan, offering scientists a novel avenue to explore aging mechanisms in both species.
In a recent paper published in The Journals of Gerontology, investigators analyzed metabolites—small chemicals generated during normal bodily processes. They discovered that specific metabolite combinations predictive of earlier or later death in dogs closely mirror patterns previously observed in humans.
“The metabolites that pose risk or provide protection for dogs are strikingly similar to those in people,” said Dr. Kate Creevy, chief veterinary officer for the Dog Aging Project and professor at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, where the project receives generous support from the WoodNext Foundation. “This overlap highlights shared features of aging biology, which is both intriguing and rewarding. It also underscores the utility of pet dogs as a model for studying long‑term health and lifespan.”
Searching for Biological Signs of Lifespan
Metabolites offer a snapshot of intracellular activity, making them valuable for detecting biological patterns tied to health and aging.
For this study, researchers examined blood samples from dogs enrolled in the Dog Aging Project, a community‑science initiative that tracks dogs throughout their lives. Owners contribute detailed surveys and, in some cases, physical specimens. The team screened the blood for metabolic signatures associated with lifespan, focusing on whether individual dogs died earlier or later than average.
“Death is a straightforward outcome to measure,” Creevy noted. “It is easy to confirm when a person or a dog has passed, whereas other aspects of aging health are more subtle.”
Using mortality as a clear endpoint enables scientists to work backward and identify which biological processes—such as metabolism, inflammation, and cellular stress responses—may have contributed to the result.
“If we understand why something occurred, we stand a better chance of finding ways to modify it,” Creevy added.
A Metabolic Fingerprint of Aging
Rather than isolating single molecules, the researchers examined thousands of metabolites collectively to uncover broader patterns linked to risk. Creevy explained that these composite profiles can reveal more about cellular activity than any individual metabolite alone.
“Some of my colleagues call it a fingerprint,” Creevy said. “We often look at a pattern or grouping that correlates with better or worse outcomes instead of focusing on a single molecule.”
These measurable biological indicators, known as biomarkers, can help researchers estimate the probability of certain health outcomes by revealing internal changes.
“Importantly, a biomarker’s association with earlier or later mortality does not imply causation,” Creevy cautioned. “When we find a biomarker linked to sooner or later death, we do not know that it directly causes the outcome. However, understanding why that biomarker appears may point us toward the underlying cause of the relationship.”
Identifying these recurring patterns gives scientists plausible starting points for probing the mechanisms of aging and, ultimately, discovering biological targets that could improve health over time.
Dogs and Humans Share Similar Aging Signals
The researchers then investigated whether the metabolic patterns observed in dogs also appear in humans. To do so, they compared their findings with five large published studies of human mortality that employed similar metabolite analyses.
Across those studies, the signals tied to earlier or later death were broadly similar to those detected in dogs.
This consistency was one of the most striking results, reinforcing the idea that dogs and humans share key features of the biology underlying aging.
“Frequently we know more about this in people than in dogs,” Creevy remarked. “If the targets overlap, we can translate human research to benefit dogs.”
The parallels could allow scientists to apply knowledge gained from human studies to improve canine health, while also using dogs to study how aging unfolds across an entire lifespan.
Why Dogs Are Valuable for Aging Research
Pet dogs offer several advantages for researchers studying aging. They share many aspects of daily life with humans, including environment, diet, and activity routines. This overlap provides a unique opportunity to examine how lifestyle and environment influence long‑term health.
“One of the things we appreciate most about learning from dogs regarding aging is their widely varied lifestyles, which mirror those of their owners in a way that is less true for other companion animals,” Creevy said.
Cats, for example, often lead more independent and relatively consistent lives. Dogs are more likely to follow the routines, environments, and activity patterns of the people they live with.
Their shorter lifespans provide another major benefit. Humans, on average, live into their 70s, whereas dogs typically live only 12‑13 years. This compressed timeline allows researchers to observe aging and lifespan outcomes in dogs far more quickly than would be feasible in human studies.
Inside the Dog Aging Project
The research was made possible by the Dog Aging Project, a nationwide, long‑term study that follows pet dogs living with owners across the United States.
Participating owners supply extensive information about their dogs’ lives, and a subset also submit biological samples each year. Together, these contributions enable researchers to track health and aging changes over time.
“The owners who enroll their dogs make everything possible,” Creevy said. “The dedication and commitment of these owners to participate in research and discovery to improve canine health is remarkable.”
Creevy noted that the latest findings represent an early but important step toward understanding the mechanisms that drive aging. Researchers have now identified metabolic patterns linked to lifespan, giving them specific biological signals to investigate further.
“This is a starting point,” she said. “We’ve identified these metabolites, and now we know where to begin looking.”
For dog owners, Creevy said the practical takeaway is simple: many of the same behaviors that promote healthier aging in people are likely to benefit dogs as well.
“Keeping them on a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy body weight, and preserving mobility and cognitive health—just as we would for ourselves—can make a difference,” Creevy concluded. “What’s good for us is probably good for them.”
