American-born entrepreneur Daniel Yu’s latest initiative, the Africa Jobs Fund, aims to invest in scalable businesses that generate employment opportunities for Africans while enhancing income levels. The fund concentrates on two strategic areas: facilitating international labor mobility and advancing export-oriented manufacturing sectors.

Yu previously established Wasoko, a thriving enterprise that links informal retailers across East Africa with consumer goods suppliers. After securing $145 million in funding, he merged Wasoko with Egypt-based MaxAB in 2024, subsequently reducing his operational involvement in the company.

In an interview with How we made it in Africa editor-in-chief Jaco Maritz, Yu discussed the economic potential in enabling Africans to access higher-paying employment abroad, alongside strategies for expanding made-in-Africa product exports. The discussion also covered Wasoko’s growth trajectory and his recommendations for young professionals navigating today’s AI-disrupted job landscape.
