A vehicle struck a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters in Wallsend on Saturday morning, leaving several people injured as fans gathered to bid farewell to the team ahead of the NRL grand final.

New South Wales Police responded to Newcastle Link Road at the Transfield Drive roundabout in Wallsend around 9:30 a.m. following reports that a car had collided with multiple pedestrians.

The driver was taken into custody at the scene.

“Several individuals have sustained injuries and are currently receiving on-site medical treatment,” police confirmed.

Both directions of Newcastle Link Road were shut down as emergency crews worked to assist the injured and secure the area, resulting in the Newcastle Knights grand final procession being rerouted.

The Newcastle Knights football club acknowledged the change via social media, expressing regret to supporters who may have missed seeing the team depart but emphasizing that public safety remained their top priority.

Police urged fans to safely leave the vicinity and avoid crowding roadways to support emergency response and traffic control operations.

“We understand this is disappointing for many dedicated supporters who look forward to showing their support for the team,” police stated. “We ask everyone to disperse peacefully and remain cautious around emergency personnel.”

“Thank you to the community for your understanding, cooperation, and continued support during this time.” NSW Ambulance has also been approached for additional information.
