Although the muscle injury affecting Neymar was only recently disclosed, Brazil national team head coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that the technical staff were aware of the issue when selecting the 2026 World Cup roster. Ancelotti noted that while Santos provided a medical report prior to the announcement, the initial diagnosis was not entirely precise.
“The report indicated the player had a minor issue, an edema, and we allowed them to manage the situation until May 27,” Ancelotti explained during a press conference. “The player was called up with the full conviction that he needed to be included. After the 27th, we took charge of Neymar’s recovery, and we continue to do so”.
The Italian manager dismissed speculation that the Seleção might remove the Santos star from the official squad, emphasizing that the medical team is working diligently to ensure his return to fitness as quickly as possible.
Ancelotti further clarified that the 26 players selected are the definitive group traveling to North America. “The 26 players I chose are the ones who will play in the World Cup,” Ancelotti concluded. “Unfortunately, Neymar has this small issue preventing him from training with the group, but he is working very well individually to recover soon”.

Sidelined for Pre-Tournament Friendlies
Ancelotti’s remarks confirm that Neymar will be unavailable for Brazil’s upcoming warm-up matches. The forward is expected to miss Sunday’s friendly against Panama as well as the final preparation match against Egypt on Saturday, June 6.
Recovery Timeline and Availability
With Ancelotti’s clarification, it appears Neymar’s projected 14-to-21-day recovery window began well before the injury was made public. Due to this early start in rehabilitation, the coaching staff has not ruled him out for Brazil’s opening match against Morocco on Saturday, June 13, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Should he not be at 100% capacity for the opener, Ancelotti and his staff expect the forward to be available for the second Group stage fixture against Haiti on Friday, June 19, in Philadelphia.
