Captain Kiran Carlson spearheaded a ruthless Glamorgan batting display with a swashbuckling 73 as the Welsh county concluded their Vitality Blast group campaign with a commanding 50-run victory over Gloucestershire at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol.
After winning the toss, the visitors amassed 235 for seven—a total that equals the fourth-highest in the club’s T20 history and ranks as the third-highest by any side at this venue. Carlson struck six sixes during his 40-ball innings, while Will Smale blazed 54 off 28 deliveries and Ben Kellaway contributed a rapid 47 from just 22 balls.
In reply, Gloucestershire were bowled out for 185, with Dawid Malan top-scoring on 39 and D’Arcy Short adding 35. Glamorgan’s attack shared the spoils effectively, as Mason Crane, Dan Douthwaite, and Kellaway each claimed two wickets to seal a comprehensive win.
Despite the defeat, Gloucestershire secured progression to the knockout stage as one of the two best third-placed teams and will face Northamptonshire on Wednesday.
Carlson and Smale set a ferocious tone on a sweltering afternoon, plundering 66 runs from the six-over powerplay and bringing up a century partnership in the ninth over. They were particularly severe on Gloucestershire loanee James Hayes, extracting 22 runs from the fifth over of the innings.
Smale smashed eight fours and a six before the stand was broken in the tenth over, when Short induced a miscue to mid-off where Graeme van Buuren held a fine high catch. Carlson reached his fifty from 31 balls and had guided the total to 156 in the 14th over when he was stumped off a wide from van Buuren.
Kellaway ensured the momentum never waned, clearing the boundary four times before falling caught behind off Hayes, whose two overs conceded 44 runs. A late cameo of 22 from nine balls by Sean Dickson propelled Glamorgan well beyond the 200-mark.
On a true pitch offering ideal batting conditions, Gloucestershire openers Malan and Short capitalised on the lightning-fast outfield, racing to a fifty partnership in just 4.3 overs. The hosts reached 67 for one at the end of the powerplay before Short departed for 35, caught at extra cover off Nathan McAndrew.
Crane applied immediate pressure, conceding only four runs in the seventh over and claiming the wicket of Miles Hammond, who was caught in the deep attempting a reverse sweep. The leg-spinner struck again in his next over, with Jack Taylor caught behind by Chris Cooke at the second attempt while cutting.
Malan had faced 27 balls and struck five fours when he was bowled attempting to launch Douthwaite out of the ground, leaving Gloucestershire 104 for four at the halfway stage. Kamran Dhariwal and James Bracey kept the chase alive momentarily, both depositing Crane for straight sixes in the 13th over.
However, Bracey holed out to long-off for 22 off Kellaway, and Dhariwal followed swiftly for a 15-ball 27, superbly caught by a diving Carlson at point off Andy Gorvin. With the required run rate climbing near 15 an over, the target proved insurmountable, despite a belligerent late 28 from van Buuren.
