Carly Simon returns with “Howl,” the lead single from her upcoming album Comes in Waves. The track, a letter to a friend dealing with a recent breakup, combines Simon’s signature storytelling with a soaring chorus that urges catharsis: “Howl like the wind/Roar like the river/Wail like the rain/Cry, shout, and shiver.” The song navigates from anger to forgiveness, capturing the journey of processing betrayal. “It’s about letting the frustration out, so it doesn’t sit and simmer,” Simon said. “It begins in anger, but it moves toward forgiveness and speaks to any situation where trust has been broken.”

Recorded at Simon’s Martha’s Vineyard studio, Comes in Waves features nine original songs and two revisited compositions. The album title, inspired by the track “Slowly,” reflects themes of renewal and self-resetting. Collaborators include the late John Forté of Refugee Camp All-Stars, as well as Simon’s children, Ben Taylor and Sally Taylor, who also created the album art. Producer Paul Samwell-Smith, who worked with Simon in the 1970s, oversaw the project alongside longtime collaborator Frank Filipetti.

The album follows Simon’s 2009 release Never Been Gone. Her 2023 anthology These Are the Good Old Days: The Carly Simon and Jac Holzman Story featured a previously unreleased version of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery.” Comes in Waves arrives August 14 with the following tracklist: 1. “Howl” 2. “Maybe I Never Loved You” 3. “Peaches” 4. “Love Has No Ending” 5. “Mother of Pearl” 6. “Slowly” 7. “Four in the Morning” 8. “The More I Look for You” 9. “Love the Way I Do” 10. “The Father Daughter Dance” 11. “Share the End” 12. “Do It Anyway”
